  Chapter One

Handing the deposit slip to the clearly impatient businessman in front of her, Veronica Sands glanced at the clock again for the fifth time in as many minutes.

“Thank you. Have a nice weekend.”

Her best friend and co-worker, Karen Morris, finished counting out money, stuck it into one of the small bank envelopes, and handed it to her customer with a smile before turning to Veronica.

“So, have you decided what you’re going to wear tonight?”

Aware of the sharp attention of the other bank teller, Robert Kincaid, Veronica kept her voice at a low whisper.

  “The red one.”

Karen’s eyes widened, her slow smile one that Veronica knew well.

  “That will get his attention.”

“That’s my mission. Honestly, Karen, I don’t know what I’ll do if this doesn’t work. To believe that someone as famous as Sinclair Majors would help me is just plain crazy, but Grandma idolizes him.”

Veronica smiled and shook her head.

“She hasn’t idolized anyone since John Wayne passed away.”

“It’ll work, Roni. If not, we’ll find another way to get that bitch.”

Nervous about the night ahead, Veronica forced a smile.

“That’s what I like about you, Karen. You’re so subtle.”

“That’s the pot calling the kettle black. Look at the way you’ve thrown yourself into this. You’re like a lioness defending her cub.”

To her annoyance, Robert came up beside her, crowding her in the small space.

“Roni, you keep looking at the clock like you have a date tonight.”

Hiding a wince at the jealousy in his tone, Veronica sent him a sideways glare, relieved that another customer stepped up to her window.

“It’s none of your business. You have a customer, Rob.”

Deliberately turning her back on him, she smiled at the next customer in line. “Can I help you?”

She’d worked at that particular branch ever since she’d graduated from high school ten years earlier and hadn’t had any problems getting along with her coworkers—until Robert’s transfer almost three months ago.

Since then, he’d pursued her relentlessly, becoming bolder by the day, so bold that he’d begun to frighten her.

The first time she’d shown fear, he seemed to enjoy it, so she’d been careful not to show it again.

He was darkly handsome, but he had a look in his eyes and an aura about him that made her decidedly uncomfortable.

Reality and fantasy were two very different things.

It was several minutes before the last of the customers
left, and by then, the bank manager prepared to close for the day.

As she shrugged on her coat, Robert moved closer, sliding an arm around her waist.

“You can’t refuse me forever, you know.” He reached up to stroke her cheek, his gaze sharp.

“I know you want to play hard to get, but I think you’re carrying this too far.”

Jerking away, she barely resisted the urge to slap him, not wanting to cause an incident in front of the others, especially her boss. Bile rose in her throat, and she had to swallow heavily before speaking.

“I’m not playing hard to get, and if you touch me again, I’ll report you.”

His lips thinned, his dark eyes hard and cold. “You’re going to be mine, Roni. Make no mistake about that, and when you are, you’re going to pay for making me wait.”

Veronica lifted her chin, determined to never show fear around him again.

  “You disgust me.”

His smile sent a shiver down her spine. “Oh, Roni. You’re very much going to pay for that.”

  * * * *

Grimacing at the sight of Robert’s car in her rearview mirror, Veronica called her grandmother.

  “Hello?”

The sound of her grandmother’s sweet voice reaffirmed Veronica’s resolve to protect her.

  “Hi, Grandma. How are you?”

“I’m fine. I just finished watering my roses. They’re really beautiful this year. Martha’s pea green with envy. Did you have a nice day, dear?”

“It was fine.” She turned onto the main highway, clenching her jaw when Robert did the same, his sports car riding her bumper. “Do you remember that I’m going to the show tonight?”

“Yes, dear. I’m so jealous. Sinclair Majors is amazing. I can’t believe he’s retiring after this show. I wish I could go, but the idea of being jostled by all those people makes my arthritis act up. Besides, driving from Annapolis to D.C. is going to take about an hour, and then another hour to get home. In this cold, my bursitis will act up. I’ll just sit here in my warm house and watch it on television with Martha. Try to get his autograph for me, will you? And one for Martha.”

“I’ll do my best, Grandma.” Veronica pulled into the lane for her exit, inwardly cursing when Robert stayed right behind her.

Knowing damned well that he lived on the other side of town, Veronica briefly considered calling the police, but she knew from the last time she’d called that it would be a waste of time.

Until Robert actually did something, there was nothing the police could do.

“Is that man at work still asking you to go out with him?”

“Yes, but it’s not a big deal.”

The last thing Veronica wanted to do was worry her grandmother.

  Her grandmother sighed.

“I do wish you’d find a good man. You deserve to be happy, Veronica, and spend your weekends going out on dates instead of hovering over me.”

Veronica pressed her foot to the gas pedal and passed a slower car, not at all surprised that Robert stayed right on her tail.

“I worry about you, especially when you won’t listen to me about that so-called psychic. She’s fake, Grandma, and using illusions to con you.”

  Her grandmother huffed.

“Now don’t you waste his time talking about something like that! Esmerelda isn’t one of those fakes. She’s the genuine article. Just like Sinclair Majors. How else could she know so much about your grandpa?”

Because she asks you the right questions and you tell her everything.

Taking her exit, Veronica glanced in her mirror again, fighting the urge to give Robert the finger. She didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of reacting to his arrogance.

“You said that if Sinclair Majors said the psychic was fake, you would believe him.” Veronica hoped so because she was running out of options.

“I know what I said, Roni. I’m not senile. But if you somehow manage to get Sinclair Majors to visit Esmerelda, he’s going to agree with me that there are just some things that can’t be explained. He understands magic after all. He’s the only one who would understand.”

Sitting at a red light, Veronica glanced in the rearview mirror, grimacing when Robert grinned at her. “Sinclair Majors understands illusions, Grandma. Esmerelda is just taking your money.”

“She’s not doing any such thing. She’s very sensitive and can talk to those on the other side.”

“I’m not going to argue about this tonight.” Feeling a headache coming on, she glanced in her mirror to see Robert still following her. She doubted very much that she’d even get the chance to see her grandmother’s idol, but knew she had to try. She just didn’t know what else to do. “Just promise me that you won’t go see Esmerelda again without me.”

“I’ll promise no such thing. It’s my money, and I can spend it any way I want. Stop fussing.”

Turning onto her street, Veronica tightened her hands on the wheel, frustrated by both her grandmother and Robert. “I know you can, but I hate to see you get cheated. If you keep paying this woman, you’re going to go through the nest egg Grandpa left for you. Do you really think that’s what he would have wanted?”

“If your grandfather wants to talk to me, I’m going to make sure he has the chance.” Her grandmother’s voice lowered. “One day I hope you’ll find a man you can love as much as I loved your grandfather.”

Clearing her throat, her grandmother sniffed, bringing tears to Veronica’s eyes.

“You go get ready for your show, and I’m going to take the pot roast out of the oven. Martha will be here any minute.”

Pulling into the driveway, Veronica watched Robert slow as he went by her house before taking off in a squeal of tires. “Okay, Grandma. Have fun. I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Okay, dear. Have fun at the show and, if you get close to that handsome devil, give him a kiss for me.” Laughing, her grandmother hung up.

Shaking her head at her grandmother’s change of mood, Veronica smiled, her smile falling when she looked at the time.

Taking a breath, she threw the car into park and turned off the engine, knowing that she didn’t have a minute to spare if she was going to make it to the show in time.

  * * * *

Veronica watched the show, mesmerized not only with the incredible illusions but by the man himself.

She couldn’t take her eyes off of him.

Although she’d seen him in several television specials, Sinclair Majors was even more spectacular in person.

He was one of the most famous magicians in the world, and Veronica suspected that his incredible good looks had as much to do with his popularity as his seemingly impossible illusions.

His shoulder-length blond hair framed a face so incredibly handsome that Veronica found herself staring at his face instead of watching the show.

Except when she watched his hands.

The graceful movements of his hands kept her mesmerized and not only because of the illusions he performed.

She couldn’t stop imagining them on her body.

Uncomfortably warm at the erotic images racing through her mind as she watched him, she looked away, only to look back again almost immediately to stare at his lips.

She could only imagine what kind of damage those lips could do to her senses.

  His voice.

How could a voice be so firm and so silky at the same time?

A voice right out of her fantasies.

His black suit couldn’t disguise the strength beneath it, his lean, muscular frame moving with a grace that only a powerful body could.

Her breath caught each time he smiled, and when he held out a hand to help his scantily clad assistant into a box, a surge of jealousy caught her off guard.

He lifted the other woman with an ease that reinforced the sense of power surrounding him.

Veronica pressed her thighs together at the unwelcome heat that settled there, her already ragged breath catching when his gaze met hers.
/>   His eyes widened briefly and then narrowed, laser-sharp as they held hers.

The roaring in her ears blocked out the sound of the music accompanying his show, and for a minute, she truly thought she would pass out.

He blinked, breaking the spell, and went on with the illusion that consisted of several beautiful women moving around him.

His assistants, all legs and saccharine smiles, moved around him, and suddenly applause broke out all around her.

His gaze met hers again, holding it longer than it had the last time before flicking away again.

She blinked, wondering what he’d done to earn such applause.

Glad that she’d had the foresight to DVR it, she joined in the applause, mortified that she’d done so just as everyone stopped clapping.

Hurriedly settling her hands on her lap, she looked away, his voice drawing her attention back to the stage.

  “And for my final illusion…”

  Final illusion?

  Shit!

The evening had flown by, and she still hadn’t figured out a way to get backstage.

The woman next to her leaned closer. “Isn’t he gorgeous?”

Veronica smiled, her breath catching when he glanced in her direction again, his green eyes seeming to glitter and narrow as his gaze passed over her.

  “He’s magnificent.”

Embarrassed that she’d said that out loud, Veronica shrugged.

“I mean he does put on a good show.”

The woman sighed. “I go to every show I can. I’m dying to meet him, but he’s got security out the wazoo. I can’t get within twenty feet of him. No matter how many times I’ve tried to get backstage to meet him, they thwart me.”
